What’s the difference between the types and brands of digital video cameras? Which is best for a non-pro?

I’m saving to buy a camcorder, and I need help deciding which one is best for me. The only type I’ve ever seen is the old VHS type of camcorder my dad used. Can someone explain to me what these types are: mini-dvd, dvd, digital? And what are good brands if I want a high-quality, basic camcorder that will last but doesn’t have a whole lot of special features?
